Why the need for a Medical and Geriatric Psychiatric Program?
As America’s population ages, the need for mental and behavioral health services continues to increase. Living with mental health problems can be challenging and, as an individual grows older, further health issues are often encountered. Research shows that seniors are at a greater risk of some mental disorders and their complications than younger people. Many people do not understand mental illness or even acknowledge its existence. Some seniors are ashamed or frightened by their symptoms or believe that this is an inevitable part of aging.
Older people can suffer from a variety of psychiatric disorders, including depression and anxiety. Memory disorders are also common among older adults. Early intervention and treatment can alleviate symptoms of mental health problems and reconnect seniors to their previous lifestyles. Haven’s Medical and Geriatric Psychiatric (Med-Psych) program is committed to treating elderly or medically fragile patients requiring hospital-level psychiatric assessment and care. Patients are admitted with a full spectrum of mental illnesses, particularly serious mood disorders, schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, and memory disorders.
Our team consists of board certified psychiatrists, psychiatric social workers, nurses, occupational and physical therapists and behavioral health technicians. Consulting medical and surgical subspecialties are, when indicated, available for prompt and helpful enhancement of our comprehensive assessments.
Because older adults can be medically fragile and psychiatrically vulnerable, an accurate diagnosis and individualized treatment plan is critical. Haven’s treatment team is uniquely skilled at completing assessments and intervening in highly complex cases involving interplay of medical, psychiatric functional and psychosocial factors. Some commonly addressed problems include impaired activities of daily living, cognitive disorganization and disruptive behaviors.
